What is the charge for this service?
There is no charge to use this service. The service is supported through
taxes and donations.
Why do I need a special player?
The books are recorded in a special format and will not play on a commercial
player.
How are books and equipment delivered to my school, and how do I return them?
All materials are mailed and returned through the Unites States Postal
Service as "free matter for the blind and physically handicapped." No postage is
necessary.
Do you have textbooks?
Our library does not carry any textbooks and we are not affiliated with any
textbook providers. One organization that provides audio textbooks is Recording
for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), 1-800-221-4792. Contact your local Talking
Book Center for additional textbook providers, or visit

What happens after I mail in my application?
As soon as we receive your application, we will register you and contact you
regarding your service.
How do I order books or know if you have a title available?
Call your reader advisor or search our online catalog for title
availability. You may order books by mail, phone, fax, and email or through the
online catalog

How many books can I check out?
There is no limit on cassette and braille books. Some limits apply to other
formats.
Can I keep my materials?
Talking Book materials, equipment and books are on loan to participants and
are the property of the federal government.
How do I let the Talking Book Center know my students need service next year?
To reactivate service for a new school year, simply complete all
correspondence forms sent to you in a timely manner, and mail them to your
Talking Book Center.
How quickly will I receive books when I order them?
Once we receive your order, if available, your books will be placed in the
mail within 2 working days. Delivery times may vary.
How long can I keep the books?
The general loan period for books is 6 weeks for cassette and braille books
and 2 weeks for PlayAways.
Is this service only for people who are blind or visually impaired?
No. It is also for students with physical limitations or an organic reading
disability (such as dyslexia).
